Why we created the Soul Jukebox app

This app has been created in response to recent YouTube changes which have prevented our site visitors from playing embedded YouTube music videos and listening to streamed music from YouTube a lot of the time. We are by no means the only music web site affected, and visitors to other popular music sites such as discogs.com, playback.fm, musicvf.com and playlistresearch.com, to name but a few, are prevented from playing embedded YouTube videos on those sites a lot of the time also, and there are no doubt many others. This is what web site visitors see all too often now instead of the YouTube video image:

So in order to watch the video in question the visitor has to go to YouTube and watch some ads first, most likely. Kind of defeats the purpose of embedding YouTube videos on ones web site really. At other times site visitors may see the splash screen image of a video displayed normally but when they click to start the video nothing happens.

It is very likely that the reason for this continual disabling of embedded videos on various music web sites such as ours by YouTube is connected with copyright issues and/or advertising revenue. As you may know, virtually any song you care to mention can be found on a Youtube video and played free of charge. In theory it should be the advertising and premium membership fees received by YouTube that pay the owners of the music their recording and publishing royalties, but in reality this does not happen a lot of the time. When a music video is embedded on another web site, for example, in many cases there is no YouTube advertising displayed on the video, and therefore the owners of the music and the recording artists receive nothing at all.

Also, in order for the music owners to get paid royalties from videos containing their music that are played on YouTube they first need to make a claim directly to YouTube, and most never do. After a music owner has made such a claim to YouTube then videos containing their music are normally demonetized if they are currently monetized, and ads are placed on them to pay royalties to the music owners, but once again this does not work with embedded videos on other sites more often than not. Most copyright owners will be OK if video creators use their music in exchange for having ads running in the videos, but this is not always happening and many artists and copyright holders receive little or nothing from Youtube.

There are similar issues with music streaming platforms such as Spotify, who, contrary to what you might have heard, do not pay artist royalties according to a per-play or per-stream rate; the royalty payments that artists receive vary according to differences in how their music is streamed or the agreements they have with labels or distributors, but if an artist no longer has such an agreement with a record label or distributor then they receive nothing at all from Spotify or other music streaming services it would seem.

In the old days prior to the advent of digital music this was not really a problem as artists knew more or less how many copies of their records had been sold, but as most music is either streamed or downloaded nowadays, most artists receive very little income from their recordings, if any, and have no knowledge whatsover as to how many of their songs have been downloaded and streamed. This is an inherent problem with intangible goods in general which upto now has not had a solution. Happily though, with the launch of the BitSong (BTSG) crypto currency last year a solution to the issue of music royalties is now at hand.

In common with Bitsong music streaming platform, the SoulJukebox app also operates with a full set of data from the start based on an artist's number of chart entries, highest chart positions attained, and number of weeks in chart of each song, ensuring artists accurately receive 100% of the royalties they deserve, payed to them in BTSG either monthly or annually. They can then swap the BTSG for Etherium and cash it out at one of the major crypto exchanges such as Binance. As the SoulJukebox app is a tangible product as opposed to a digital download, it is very much simpler to keep track of the number of units sold in order to calculate the royalties and revenue share of each artist, and BTSG is the ideal NFT to help revolutionize the way that artists receive their royalties.

Soulyears.com features just about every Soul R&B single that ever made it into the US R&B and UK Pop charts between 1956 and 2010 as well as many thousands more that didn't chart or were only released as album tracks - some 32,500+ songs in all, and most site visitors come here to listen to songs, read song lyrics, and view chart information, but as most of the songs streamed from YouTube no longer play a lot of the time, we decided to make them available on a much improved version of the Soulyears.com web app that runs entirely from a USB flash drive in Chromium or Firefox web browsers utilizing a built-in Apache 2 server similar to the ones used by internet web site hosting services.

Our new app therefore runs completely independently of the Internet and can be used anywhere in the world on just about any Windows or Apple Mac PC or laptop computer. It even comes with its own built-in self-booting Linux operating system enabling it to be used on computers/laptops with faulty hard drives or no hard drive at all even. So if you have an old Windows or Mac laptop that no longer boots up laying around collecting dust you can now turn it into your own soul R&B jukebox simply by setting it to boot from USB and inserting our new SoulJukebox USB app into it! .

A major problem with digitally downloaded music is that a song or album can be paid for once and downloaded in mp3 format from a site such as iTunes or Amazon and then shared with others multiple times. The artists and music owners receive no revenue at all from this shared music of course. What makes Soul Jukebox very unique and different is that there are no mp3 or other format audio files on it that can be copied and shared at all as all the songs and music are integrated into the app software itself, and as the software will only run on the flashdrive it was distributed on, it is not possible to make copies of or successfully clone the USB drive to share with others, thus ensuring that the artists, music owners, distributors, etc., receive the royalties they rightly deserve.

Our new SoulJukebox app has a great many new and improved features compared with the Soulyears.com web app, which has not been updated for a number of years, and no longer works as well it used to. With the new SoulJukebox app you will have access to all the same chart information and song lyrics as Soulyears.com and will be able to add your own song lyrics to songs that do not presently have the lyrics as well as modify existing song lyrics to correct mistakes. You will also be able to add comments to individual songs, and group them together in categories, as well as create an unlimited number of playlists. Needless to say, the SoulJukebox app runs at lightning speed in comparison to Soulyears.com website as it does not run from the internet but instead from its own built-in web server as mentioned above.

The Souljukebox app is supplied on a high quality Sandisk brand USB flashdrive and is available in 32GB and 128GB versions for Windows (version 7 upwards) and Mac OSX operating systems. The 32GB "Lite" version features the top 100 soul r&b songs for every year from 1956-2010 as well as a large collection of soul r&b videos as well. The full 128GB version features all 32,500+ songs by 9,000+ artists that are featured on the Soulyears.com website. It also features a Weekly Chart section where you will be able to search and look up the legendary weekly Cashbox Magazine soul/r&b charts from 1950 right upto 1996 when the magazine stopped publishing the charts.

The SoulJukebox app also has a Radio random-play mode allowing you to choose a category from Disco Dance, Funk Sounds, Hip Hop/Rap, Instrumental, Jazzy Sounds, Night Grooves, Reggae, Southern Soul and Tamla Motown, and it will continually play random songs from your chosen category just like an FM radio station. The SoulJukebox app even includes a slideshow which you can set to turn on at a chosen interval after which it will display beautiful Nature photos and paintings while you listen to the beautiful music!

The Souljukebox app is truly one of a kind, and there is no other portable music app in the world that even comes close in comparison. Any fan of soul, r&b, funk, disco dance, reggae, hip hop, pop, ballads, etc., is sure to love this new app. It also makes an awesome and affordable as well as very unusual gift for others. And most importantly, it is the first portable music app in the world to provide artists with the opportunity to receive their full royalty dues in Bitsong crypto currency.

Soul Jukebox is supplied on a good quality Sandisk flashdrive that comes with our own 3-year warranty and license as well as a 5 year manufacturer's warranty. Once our 3 year warranty period and license have expired the device will continue to operate for a time but may stop working soon after, so it is advisable to purchase a new updated one by then. By doing so you will be helping to support the recording artists also who receive a share of the profits from every Soul Jukebox sold.

We intend to phase out the soulyears.com website in its present form over the coming months, and replace it with a new Soul Jukebox "try-before-you-buy" demo website which will focus on promoting Bitsong in particular, as well as some other cryptocurrencies connected to the music industry most likely. Eventually we intend to launch our own cryptocurrency aimed specifically at providing recording artists with performance rights royalties which they do not presently get. Recording artists earn royalties from the sale of their recordings on CDs, cassette tapes, and, in the good old days, vinyl; that is if they still have recording contracts that provide for this. Contrary to what many people believe, recording artists don't earn royalties on public performances (when their music is played on the radio, on TV, or in bars and restaurants) at all. It will be the aim of our new cryptocurrency to help rectify this unfair situation by providing methods whereby recording artists can finally receive performance rights royalties.

The corporate giants that presently control the music industry have had it their way for far too long, at the expense of the recording artists mainly, and now is the time to change things around and do away with the bureaucracy and corporate control of the music industry, and Soul Jukebox and cryptocurrencies like Bitsong are geared very much toward that end. It is all about decentralization of the monetary system and control grid really. Meanwhile, the powers that shouldn't be that control this world at the moment will do all they can to centralize power more and more as they realize that their time is short.

Meet Some Happy Soul Jukebox Users...

"I'm a hospital radio DJ and also do some club deejaying now and then and this new usb soul jukebox device is just awesome and has made my life so much easier as I have many thousands of great sounds to choose from now, many of which I had never heard before, and creating a playlist with this is a breeze. It works great with my Mac and searches are lightning fast. It's great that all the songs are listed in order of the best selling ones first also as this makes it easy for me to choose popular songs to play. Good job. Will be buying one or two more soon. Cheers,"

Tim Sullivan, Brighton, UK

"We especially like the Radio Mode of Soul Jukebox. It's like having your own programmable RnB music radio station! My eleven year old daughter figured out how to use the app in around 2 minutes flat... it's that easy to use."

Todd F., from Idaho, USA

"I recently won a SoulUSB drive in a competition and I like it a lot as it has lots of dance music and love songs. I have been showing it to friends and I think I should become your sales lady! (jk) It would be nice if it worked on my cellphone as I don't have my own laptop yet, but will be buying one soon."

Becca Reyes - Leyte, Philippines

"Wah Gwaan soul music peeps! This is truly a wicked music player. I love soul, hiphop and reggae of course, so this is really my ting. It's a tun up idea. Wish I had taught of it! Big up to dem that did. You can get it if you really want :)"

Fitzroy Hines, Balham, UK

"I was very excited when my jukebox thumb drive arrived as I have been a huge fan of reggae and soul since i was a teen. It is really simple to use thank God as I am a bit slow on the uptake normally when it comes to computer stuff. Just plugged it into my Macbook, clicked on the icon and after entering a pin number it started, and wow! I have it playing in the background all the time now at my place of work. It's very easy to program a playlist and has lots of built in playlists also. It's a great buy and I plan to get another one soon so that I can have one at home and one at work. I think that this would make a really good birthday or christmas present for a music lover like me, so i'll probably end up buying several more later this year. Thanks you guys and keep up the great work!"

Shandra Smith - Muldraugh, Kentucky, USA

"Very impressive! I only just received my soul jukebox flash drive the other day and have had it playing continually ever since. There are some great playlists included on it already, plus with the ability to create my own, what more could any RnB and HipHop junkie like me ever want? I ordered the deluxe version which has lots of complete albums on it as well as more than 30k singles. These are some of the best soul albums ever recorded in my opinion.

The flash drive it arrived on is bigger than normal, but looks very robust and well made. It's really fast also. I can recommend this soul jukebox wholeheartedly and guarantee that if you love RnB and HipHop you're gonna love this!"

Craig Lyle - Pittsburg, PA, USA

"I grew up in the 60s-70s golden era of soul music listening on my small transistor radio to the late, great BB Bird Brain Davis spinning the tunes on KOKA AM. Few if any radio stations play that type of RnB music anymore as sad as it is and I miss those simple days so much. How incredible it was to receive the Soul Jukebox pen drive and be able to listen to my favorite music and relive those days in memory all over again. Every day I discover wonderful new songs from that era which I have never heard before. I have no other word for Soul Jukebox other than awesome. As far as I am concerned it is the best music playing program in the world bar none. If you are a lover of RnB music then get one. You won't be disappointed, that's for sure. A thing I love about it is that I can take it with me on bass fishing trips in remote areas toward Tallulah as it does not need the internet. Kudos to whoever came up with such a brilliant idea. Much appreciated. I hope they sell a ton of them as obviously a great deal of work has gone into making such an incredible device available at such a reasonable cost."

Phil Johnson - Shreveport, Louisiana, USA

"I didn't know much about R&B music until a few months ago. I had heard Bruno Mars, Beyonce and Michael Jackson before of course, but that was about it. My dad gave me a SoulJukebox with a Windows 10 tablet for my birthday and I am so pleased he did as listen to it all the time."

Justine Anne (age under 20) - Manila, Philippines

"I haven't been too much into soul music up to now, mainly because they don't play much of it on radio or MTV anymore so it seems. My dad plays it in the car though, so I did get to hear some Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, etc. when with him. The soul jukebox includes plenty of rap and hip-hop which I like and my dad hates, as well as all other types of r&b music, so I'm discovering dope songs that I have never heard before virtually every time I use it. The slow jams are especially chill for late night listening. There's enough great music on here to last me a lifetime I should think. Great value for money also as I could never afford to buy this number of songs if I had to pay for each download. So I guess this will save me a lot of money in the long run. But on the other hand I'm a young Baltimoron according to my dad so what do I know? I'm very happy with my purchase anyway, and thanks for offering to give me free access to the online version too. I really appreciate it."

Deshawn Matthews - Catonsville, Maryland, USA

"I have been a regular visitor to soulyears.com for several years and love the site as I have found lots of great songs by some of my favorite singers that I had never heard before even. When I visited the site a few weeks back I was redirected to a page about the Soul Jukebox and decided to get me one there and then. It arrived after around one week and I gotta say that it is the bomb! It's much faster than the web site and very simple to use. Comes with a beautiful slideshow even...love it! Thanks so much :)"

Danni Evans - Tampa Bay, Florida, USA

"I'm a huge rhythm and blues addict in more ways than one :) I was over the moon when I received a SOULUSB as a present from my step father recently. The only problem was that when I plugged it into my computer it asked for a pin number which I didn't have so I could't use it! I got that sorted out the next day though and have it up and running on my new Huawei laptop and it is bad man! I tried booting my laptop up with it yesterday and had to mess with the bios settings to do so but got there eventually. It run even faster on Linux it seems and searches give immediate results. It's very well designed and simple to use. Best present I ever got for sure. I will be sending lots of customers your way so I better get some commission from you guys."

Michael Williams - Wilmington, Delaware, USA

"My name is Marvin. I would like to tell you a true story. I was born in the early 50's. I was raised up on soul music. I like to listen to all the genres of soul (From Doo Wop to Hip Hop). One day my wife came home from work and said, Marvin, You have to go on line and check out this music site that I ran across, You're going to love it! The site was soul years.com. Well, I'm not a real savvy computer guy. But when I finally opened up the page, I was totally Blown Away. The home page name was Soul Years R&B Music Portal. The page was organized and things categorized (Top 2000 R&B artists. R&B charts from 1956 through to 2010). Unbelievable! This had to be R&B junkie heaven. So if you need a fix for Soul Music, This is the site that you should look into.

I've had the privilege of testing Soul Jukebox. This portable version is amazing. If you are an R&B freak like myself, You will be excited like a young girl when she first saw her first Superstar up close. The program itself is so easy to navigate, Just click a year, artist or genre and Wallah! You can start listening to songs that you may have forgotten, songs that you know and songs that you don't know. You can even make play lists and save them. If you were to try to buy or find all of these songs, It would take a lot of money and time (And some of these songs you just can't find). All you have to do is just CLICK and you're there. It's just that easy! If you like R&B music as much as I do, This is a MUST! Highly Recommended. Sincerely,"

Marvin Simpson, Philadelphia, USA

The app runs in the portable versions of Chromium (for Windows) and Firefox (for Mac and Linux) web browsers which are included as part of the software installed on the flashdrive, and is much like a normal web app, except that all the software including the songs and music are served from a localhost mini-server that it installed on the flashdrive, therefore no internet is needed. The app runs on Windows 7 upwards and Apple Mac OSX. The flashdrive also includes its own built-in self-booting Linux operating system enabling it to run on most modern computers, even ones with a faulty or missing hard drive! The Linux operating system also includes a whole suite of other useful apps and programs, games, etc., to keep the user occupied while listening to their favourite songs.
